Futbol Injuries - Update

~~update 13, nov 08~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

good advice, thanks. except you josh. poke it with a searing hot needle? i think i'd rather let the thing pop off from the pressure. anyway, the ring came off today, which means swelling is going down. what a relief, after 4 days. it still hurts and there's still blood under the nail, but it's feeling much better and i'm sure it's not broken.

hannah is on the mend i guess. she still keeps me up all night with her coughing fits, but i do get to beat her for it, per doctor's orders. after she uses her breathing apparatus, which is suppose to loosen the infection in her lungs, i get to beat her on the back, to further loosen the delightfulness so she can caugh it all up! nice, huh? well, i never said it was glamorous.

Hey there,

I didn't think I'd be posting today, as i can't use my right thumb, and it's strangely dificult to type without it. You should try it...

But I do need some advice. Anyone know a miracle way of decresing swelling? I hurt my thumb yesterday, and it has swelled so much that I can't get my ring off, and it's cutting off blood circulation. My right thumb is a big red balloon right now and the ring is making it worse. Any ideas on how to get the swelling down, besides ice and advil? Neither seem to be doing any good so far and I'm trying to avoid going to the doctor, at least until the swelling goes down so I can see what's really wrong with it. Maybe it's broken, I don't know...
Anyway, I was playing futbol yesterday at a congregation get together dealy-o. I was the goalie, of course without gloves or anything, and a hard kick hit my hand wrong, took my nail half off and who knows what else. Anyway, at least there was a lot of blood from the nail, so I didn't look like too much of a woose leaving the game, although it was still totally embarrassing. But at leat I was successful in stopping the goal, if nothing else.

Everyone here is telling me to soak my finger in hot water with salt. As hot as I can stand. Has anyone heard of this method before?

Hannah is still sick, goimg on 3 weeks. She finally went to the Doctor today on my insistance. (See mom, I'm taking care of her). Good thing too, as it turns out she has a lung infection. They've got her on antibiotics, gave her a shot of penecillin, (sp?) and using the contraption shown below to loosen the stuff in her lungs. She is to stay in bed, which means missing the CO visit this week. Oh well, maybe the CO can walk across the hall and give her the highlights. You guys can leave Hannah a "Get well" message in your comments for this post. She should be better in a week, just in time for my parent's visit. The weather changes so fast here, I think it's a shock to our systems. Sometimes, the temperature drops by 50 degrees within just a few hours. Coupled with the contamination and dust that we breath in all day, it's a recipe for sickness. Anyway, besides that, we're doing fine.

Tata for now.
thanks for any suggestions.

Futbol, as most know, is religion down here in South America. Although I enjoy the sport a lot, I think I'll stick to watching it on the tellie and leave the playing to professionals.

How bad is it? Worst case scenario, prick the thumb with a searing hot needle. At least that's what you are supposed to do if you smash your finger with something like a hammer and you need to relieve the swelling. But that sounds like not too much more fun then getting the ring off. Do you have Benydryll (sp?)? Allergy medicine may work.

I know I haven't written. Trying to get things back in order since I got back from class. One day... I'll be a better friend. :)

Hope your finger is better, by now it has either popped off or is better. If not also try holding it above your heart as much as you can. You know Thumbs up and all.
The hot needle is for relieving pressure under the nail not so much for all over swelling. Sounds like we are going to have to pack more clothes with temmp swings like they are. Whatever it is it is sure to be better than the snow we are having right now on this Minnesota work trip. Well less than a week now. See you on monday, we leave 6:00 am. We don't have many umbrellas yet but maybe they are a last minute item.
Bye for now

Hi my girls,
My own professional opinion, you both need your mom (& M&M’s). Thank you Elsie for looking out for Hannah. Good job! Hannah, even with the mask on you look so good. But having talked to you, I know you were very sick. Glad you’re on the mend.
Advice for your thumb, Else, is pretty consistent, ice and advil. But here’s just a little more…
·apply ice packs to your finger for 20 to 30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 or 3 days or until the pain goes away
·elevate your hand on a pillow while you are lying down or on the back of a chair or couch while you are sitting (to help reduce swelling)
·take an anti-inflammatory
·do exercises to strengthen your finger during the healing process.

Week 1-4
-No PT requiring grasping and pulling with affected hands(s)
-Self-limited grasping and pulling with affected hand(s) on duty
-No rifle/pistol use
-Caution when driving motor vehicle

So put that gun away for now (not sure why that was included)

See you soon!!!

Goodness, My internet goes out and I miss all sorts of stuff. Glad to hear your thumb is getting better, your Mom is right, ice, advil and elevation.
Hannah, how scary. I hope you are on the mend, do your breathing therapy, and let EDlsie thump you, it does help. Remember, I spent a month in the respiratory critical care at Mayo, and there were a lot of people getting thumped!

Ice! Ice! -- I'll bet if you'd yelled that and ran like you know what and got ice on it right away it might have kept the swelling down. :)

Just kidding. I'm so sorry you've been injured, Elsie. And Hannah so sick! Glad your Mom will be there soon to make it all better.
