Sweet! We got our censo cards and are now official ¨non citizen¨citizens here in Ecuador. Our friend Rodrigo drove us into the city on Monday morning so we could go to Immigration to process our visas and recieve our censo card, which is an ID card of sorts that identifies us as missionaries of the branch, with two year residency status.
So after dropping of Esteban, Rodrigo´s son, at school, he took us to his work to hang out until Immigration opened at 8. He owns a small printing press. Well, upon leaving his office, he realized that he´d locked his keys in the car. This was a problem as this was our one chance to get the cenco card that week, after which we are fined 200 dollars per day without it. And of course, he had no spare set. So Rodrigo and his work mate were trying in vain to get the car open with some wire. After a while, a group of young guys walked by and made some comment about knowing how to get into that model of car. Rodrigo asked if they were serious and with in seconds they ran over to the car, pulled out a screwdriver from their pocket and popped the trunk open as if it were unlocked. We were all staring at them, wondering how they did that so fast and then realized that they were ¨professionals¨ working in the neighborhood. After giving them a couple bucks, we watched them walk down the street and start casing the other cars.
Well, we got out of there quick and made our way to Immigration, where we were sent all over tarnation to get photos and make copies and pay a wopping $4 for the cards. Having success, we celebrated at a pretty decent little coffee shop downtown before catching the bus home to make our 3:00 bible study appointments. Thanks for the help Rodrigo! And watch out for your neighborhood triple A

The car thieves cracked me up. I had soething similar happen in Portland near a seedy Denny's in the middle of the night. We asked if anybody had a coat hanger, and this disreputable guy whips out this professional looking tool abviously designed for opening cars and Voila'! He had a very secretie air about the whole thing, but we were just glad to get back on the road.
Glad to here there's at least the occasional decent coffee!
