Experiences from the Field

So as of today i have my first bible study. I so do not feel ready to be conducting a bible study with my limited spanish ( that´s an understatement), but all the sisters say that i should just go for it. That is how I´m going to learn. And of course I will always bring another sister with me who will provide a lot of help.

Her name is Lupe and I found her at her while she was at work in an accounting office. She´s maybe 23 or so. The first time i went i just did a real simple presentation and she said that yes she has a bible, but she doesn´t read it much because she doesn´t understand what she reads. So today I went back with the bible teach book and started a study. Sounds simple doesn´t it.

Then I have another return visit who may turn into a study. I went to her house yesterday, but someone answered and said that she was in the shower, so we turned and started walking to the next call. Then a minute later she ( my call) came running down the street in her bathrobe, trying to catch up to us. She was sorry we couldn´t talk just then, but she wanted to get my phone number so that she could call and we could set a time for me to come back with the bible teach book.

I have one other potential study. She is actually the study of another sister in the hall. But this sister is learning ecuadorian sign language and wil soon be switching over to the sign language congregation, so she needs to turn over all her studies. So I´ve been going out in service here for three weeks, and already have three potential studies. We´ll have to see if they actually stick to it. We´ve noticed that the concept of time and shedules here is very flexible.

Elsie has quite an interesting challenge here. She found a woman out in service who said that yes she would love to learn more about the bible, but there is just one problem: she can´t read. So now Elsie is teaching her to read, using a booklet published by the society.

So obviously there is a great need here. However there are many other parts of the country that the need is even greater. For example, yesterday we met a brother who is serving in a congregation out in the jungle. There are 15 publishers, and he is the only pioneer and the only elder. And no ministerial servants. Their territory is larger than the territory of all three congregations in this valley combined. Many of the people they talk to in the ministery have never been preached to before and they have a strong desire to learn more. Maybe some day we´ll relocate to the jungle.

Well I better go now. I have to go create some new experiences to write about. I´m meeting a sister this afternoon for a couple bible studies. Hasta luego

Hannah
